New Jersey’s School Based Programs Provide a Lifeline to Children and Youth Throughout much of his childhood, Marcus St. Vil experienced a lot of time alone, as his mother was away for extended periods, and he moved multiple times between his parents’ homes. He was extremely shy and had difficulty developing friendships. “I was in my own bubble. I didn’t talk to anyone,” he shared. During high school, Marcus dedicated his time to volunteering for various programs and events organized by The Bridge, gradually assuming leadership roles. As a founding member, manager, and host of The Bridge's podcast, Safe Space , he showcased his commitment to making a positive impact. Reflecting on his time at The Bridge, Marcus acknowledged the organization's pivotal role in his personal and professional development. The programs provided him with a "Safe Space" where doors were always open, treating him like family and serving as a significant influence in shaping the person he is today. "They helped me to mold myself in becoming the person I am," he said. Marcus works full-time at The Bridge as a Youth Liaison, Marketing Coordinator and Data Analyst. At the same time, he is carrying a full course load, studying Finance and Managerial Accounting at Rutgers University, and he aims to start a business after he gains more work experience. “By my senior year, I was tutoring people and I’m still doing this,” Marcus added. “The Bridge saw my potential and helped me to be productive and build confidence.”
