2025 Spring Registration Brochure

Registration Brochure 11 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The mental health crisis among college students is an ongoing challenge, with the impacts of COVID-19 and prolonged social isolation still evident. Despite efforts to expand clinical support, the demand for mental health services continues to outpace resources, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach. This presentation outlines how a holistic, three-pronged wellness model incorporating non-clinical case management can transform college counseling centers and provide more effective support for students. Traditional clinical services, while essential, cannot solely address the scale of the issue. Attempting to hire more clinicians alone will not suffice; instead, a broader approach that incorporates prevention and holistic support is crucial. This provides a bridge between students and appropriate resources, offering individualized support without duplicating clinical mental health treatment. Not all students require clinical therapy, and non-clinical case management offers a valuable alternative for those who need guidance and support in managing life's challenges without the need for formal therapeutic intervention. Non- clinical case managers work alongside clinical staff to assess needs and make referrals as needed, ensuring students receive timely and appropriate care. This approach is similar to evidence-based models where early intervention and referral are central. Non-clinical case management enables the integration of the eight dimensions of wellness into student support services. It offers students a space to openly express their needs and concerns, allowing non-clinical staff to assess and prioritize plans of action that best support students’ overall well- being. By applying these principles, colleges can efficiently manage mental health needs, prioritizing clinical resources for those who need them most. The comprehensive approach of the three-pronged wellness model acknowledges that student well-being extends beyond traditional mental health services. It emphasizes students’ autonomy over their wellness journeys and provides a network of support that extends beyond clinical treatment. By moving beyond traditional clinical services, institutions can build sustainable, holistic support systems that not only address students’ immediate needs, but also foster their long-term well-being and success. Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, attendees will be able to: 1. Identify the increased need for holistic mental health support for college students. 2.
