S P E A K E R COURSE DESCRIPTION: As conversations surrounding the intersection of law enforcement and mental health continue to shape the public safety landscape, we invite you to explore public safety through a psychological lens. Hear directly from mental health clinicians and law enforcement professionals serving on the frontlines of hostage and crisis negotiation. Gain rare access to the typically closed world of policing’s elite Hostage and Crisis Negotiation Teams (H/CNT) as they integrate mental health expertise into their operations. This presentation will provide an overview of the H/CNT approach, the skills essential to supporting peaceful resolution, and the central commitment to preserving humanity and dignity of all involved. Velten will outline how mental health specialists enhance crisis responses by providing expert knowledge, access, and support that were previously unavailable. She will also highlight developing best practices for effectively utilizing mental health professionals before, during, and after high-risk, rapidly evolving incidents. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this session, attendees will be able to: 1. Describe the core skills required to support peaceful resolution in high-stress incidents, with an emphasis on preserving the humanity and dignity of everyone involved. 2. E xplain how modern policing models — specifically Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Teams — integrate mental health professionals, and identify the expert knowledge, access, and support these professionals contribute to the teams. 3. Identify how mental health professionals support crisis intervention across all phases: training and prevention, in- crisis support and post-incident debriefing and postvention.
