23 NJAMHAA Annual Report FY 2024 BILLING SUPERVISORS PRACTICE GROUP QUALITY ASSURANCE AND COMPLIANCE COMMITTEE Co-Chairs: Candice Moore Electronic Health Record and Billing Compliance Director, Cumberland County Guidance Center Co-Chairs: Karen Acker Chief Administrative Officer/Chief Compliance Officer, West Bergen Mental Healthcare The Billing Supervisors Practice Group has been focused on getting paid in a managed care environment. In March, providers were encouraged to attend one of two Provider Subgroup Meetings (depending on their programs) as NJ FamilyCare transitions for behavioral health services. This is the most active group on NJAMHAA’s Groupsite and members are very interactive with their discussions. The members assist each other with denials, coding questions, and credentialing as needed. The Billing Supervisors Practice Group goes beyond tackling new issues and changes taking place in the behavioral healthcare system and this committee is a much needed resource for them. There was a lot of discussion and group support on Medicare updates, including Medicare credentialing, as licensed mental health counseling and marriage and family therapy providers can now be reimbursed; intensive outpatient program coverage went into effect; and coverage of services provided through telehealth was expanded. The Quality Assurance and Compliance Committee continues to have a steady number of members, who are interested in learning more about related issues facing behavioral healthcare providers. Quarterly meetings have provided opportunities to showcase both members and external speakers who are knowledgeable in these areas. Topics of discussion included healthcare cybersecurity and business continuity planning; anatomy of a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) breach; HIPAA updates; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/Office of Civil Rights updates and enforcement; 42 CFR Part 2 updates; the No Surprises Act; civil monetary penalties; inflated adjustments; documentation requirements for partial-care providers; client satisfaction surveys; updates on Medicaid and Medicare; guardian consents; psychiatric advance directives; accreditation; and audits. Additionally, the co-chairs presented a workshop, IT in Health Care: Intersection of Technology and Healthcare Compliance , at the IT Project Conference 2024: Beyond Boundaries, Exploring IT Opportunities . They summarized the importance of today’s fast-paced healthcare environment, the intersection of technology and the critical importance of compliance. The workshop was designed for IT and healthcare professionals aiming to master the safeguarding of patient data in the digital era, and it emphasized compliance with regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act. Through comprehensive exploration, participants gained insights into the collaborative efforts between the technology and healthcare sectors, which are essential for ensuring robust data protection strategies.
