New knowledge on genetics and neuroplasticity attests to several of the biomedical causes and effects of these disorders, yet stigma persists. This talk will describe the fundamental causes of stigma and discrimination in relation to substance use disorder, review some of the paradoxical findings from the latest stigma research, and suggest how stigma and discrimination might be more systematically addressed to enhance the clinical care and outcomes of individuals suffering from substance use disorder. Yet, we are facing an unprecedented drain of qualified per- sonnel in our field. COVID has led to a highly competitive recruiting en- vironment. Individuals are leaving our organizations and either leaving the field or going to work for competitors. In addition, the hiring pool is as shallow as ever and demands for complex care needed in our communities are rising. This session will focus on how Acenda has implemented a culture of innovation as a tool in recruiting and retaining staff and building the next level leadership. We will focus on two of Acenda’s innovations: Development and Disruption by Design. Acenda has implemented a leadership development program for emerging and mid-level leaders. Acenda Advance provides the necessary tools for staff to begin walking down a path to leadership development. We will discuss the workings of a peer nomination process, applicant review and six-month leadership track, all focused on bringing out the next level leaders. Second, we will dive into the innovative ideas behind our Disruption by Design and how Acenda has implemented Innovation Hubs, an Innovation Challenge and Program Brainstorms as avenues to engage our teams, encourage ‘out of the box’ thinking and support our workforce in ways outside of traditional means. L earning O bjectives : At the end of this session, attendees will be able to : • Define a culture of innovation. • Identify at least one concrete innovation for follow-up. • Identify two next steps for internal discussion.
