D irector of L itigation , C ommunity H ealth L aw P roject C ourse D escription : This session will explain how the law serves as a social determinant of health. The overall health needs of individuals are left unmet without just and fairly implemented legal policies and affordable and adequate legal representation. As such, the law is the most powerful means of determining individual health outcomes. Presenters will explain the concept of social determinants of health and describe specific case- work in which the law served to stabilize housing, gain access to public benefits and ensure the safety of individuals. Upon the completion of this session, attendees should be able to identify legal means of serv- ing individuals in need of assistance and how to access legal sources to achieve that end. L earning O bjectives : At the end of this session, attendees will be able to: • Define social determinants of health. • Identify how the law directs social determinants of health and overall health outcomes. • Analyze specific examples of how the law redirects social deter- minants of health to the benefit of both patients and healthcare providers. This session will assist learners in transforming each of their organizations into one that promotes racial tolerance and is a positive force for change. Attendees will leave understanding the concept of intersec- tionality, the potential influences of historical racism on agency poli- cies, the usefulness of caucusing and the value of developing staff with a heightened awareness of equity. They will also leave with examples of concrete tools to begin implementing change. While this session is open to all, it is specifically targeted towards leadership and others who can influence change within their organizations. L earning O bjectives : At the end of this session, attendees will be able to: • Define the concept of intersectionality and how it can be applied within an organization. • Complete an analysis of the agency to identify any diversity/inclu- sion concerns and identify a process to address those concerns. • Create spaces for staff to be able to carry out conversations within the agency that encourage debate and increase staff’s critical thinking skills.
