Employees should always escort clients, patients, consumers and other visitors to and from the reception areas. • Reach out to local police and emergency responders. Provide themwith a current copy of your building schematics. Invite them to your facility so they become familiar with the layout and offer security advice. • Conduct annual training and regular drills. • Provide a system for employees to report actual and potential incidents without fear of retaliation. Hazard Assessment: Employers need to consider all possible hazards that may lead to instances of workplace violence, including recent terminations that may have been particularly difficult. Conduct a walk-through inspection of your facility and grounds to determine the security of all entry points. Are doors left propped open during breaks? Are windows latched and locked?What areas need further securement? Physical Controls: These are referred to as ‘engineering’ or physical controls used to reduce or eliminate workplace violence hazards. • Consider installing keyless door entries and buzzer systems with cameras in reception areas. • Install convex mirrors installed at the end of hallways to expand visibility for safety. • Install panic buttons mounted under desks or attached to breakaway lanyards to use for immediately alerting local law enforcement of emergency situations. • Consider the arrangement of furniture to avoid entrapment. • Identify and communicate to staff about safe rooms to be used during lockdown situations. • Install adequate lighting in parking lots and around building perimeters. • Purchase door-defense systems, such as door jams based upon the swing or hinge of each door.
