While some labs were not able to serve many people due to COVID, Sigmund Laboratory hit the ground running, offering telehealth from the day its doors first opened during the pandemic. The lab continues to accommodate individuals who do not want to go to facilities and those who cannot go to labs because they lack transportation or they are not able to leave work. Oral fluid swabs are sent to the clients, the lab staff observes the sample collection and packaging through telehealth, and the samples are picked up at the individuals’ homes. As anyone would probably guess, Sigmund Laboratory is named after Sigmund Freud, the godfather of psychology, which “ties into addiction in many cases,” Mrs. Pitts stated, adding that Dr. Freud experimented with cocaine, so it “ties into our niche, toxicology.”
