October 2021 17 For organizations to be successful, leaders “must think strategically all the time; they can’t sit still,” according to Dennis Miller, FACHE, Founder and Chairman of DCM Associates, a NJAMHAA Approved Vendor and Integrated Healthcare Council member. “They must know how to assess, develop and retain their talent,” he added. For-profit businesses are open to conducting assessments because they are bottom-line driven. However, “the biggest challenge for nonprofits is the need for everyone to do self- evaluation and self-reflection. There has been resistance among the nonprofit world to see how they’re doing compared to others,” according to Miller. “It’s a newworld. To succeed, all organizations need to be open to assessment, evaluations and change,” Miller stated. He explained that assessments are individualized, ongoing and focused on development, whereas evaluations provide observations on howwell goals and standards are being met and identify areas for improvement. In fact, Miller observed that the pandemic presented an opportunity for organizational assessments. “It has prompted people to take a sense of what they have been doing and modify, enhance, expand or eliminate services, based on their priorities,” he said. COVID also presented an opportunity for DCMAssociates that benefits their existing and potential clients. They developed online assessments and evaluation tools.
