NJAMHAA News Winter 2023
28 Winter 2023 Eleos Health’s Advanced Technology Automates Documentation and Reduces Staff Burnout When Alon Joffe was in the military, he and his colleagues got their “first glimpse into the behavioral health sector and demand for services and need for quality care,” as he stated. “We saw a lot of our loved ones not improving for years, despite receiving treatment,” he added. These experiences incited him, Dror Zaide and Alon Rabinovich to establish Eleos Health. “Our mission is to improve quality of care and outcomes, and enable providers to do their jobs by automating operations, and reducing the burden of administrative work,” said Joffe, who is also the CEO of Eleos. The co-founders Zaide and Rabinovich are the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology & Security Officer, respectively. In fact, “high administrative burdens are a top driver of burnout,” according to Executive Report: HowAI,ML, andNLU CanReduce Provider Burnout , which Eleos published in 2022. “Did you know that the average provider spends 12-15 minutes documenting progress notes for every 45-60minute session? That’s one session’s worth of time spent on ops [operations] for every four sessions delivered,” Eleos stated in this document. Data from 2018 indicate that 25% of clinicians reported feeling consistently burned out in their jobs. Since the pandemic began, this percentage jumped to nearly 33% and it is likely to continue increasing, according to a comprehensive December 2021 study conducted by Arch Collaborative and KLAS Research. Other research conducted by the American Psychological Association showed that in 2018, approximately 21% to 61% of mental health practitioners experienced burnout and a follow-up study in 2020 showed that this percentage skyrocketed to 78%. “Worse still, when clinicians experience any burnout symptoms, they become 68%more likely to leave their jobs,” Eleos shared in its report. To address these challenges, Eleos developed advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology that uses voice analysis and natural language processing (NLP) to improve treatment outcomes and save time on documentation and other administrative tasks. Not only is the documentation automated, but it also includes deep clinical insights that make the notes muchmore meaningful for strategically planning future treatment for each individual. When the company was launched in March 2020, Eleos’ goal was to augment solely in-person behavioral healthcare services. Just a fewweeks later, COVID hit and they realized they needed to also support telehealth and they repurposed their product to do just that. “COVID impacted our roadmap. We’ve seen a spike in telehealth and in overall demand for service, yet the supply remained the same. Workforce is the number one challenge for providers, so we are putting a lot of emphasis on automating documentation work, ensuring compliance and streamlining care operations — in other words, more care, less ops,” Joffe said. He shared that Eleos customers can achieve a 50%decrease in documentation time, which translates into that muchmore time available to deliver services. Not surprisingly, feedback fromclinicians has been positive, as shown in a December 6, 2022 webinar NJAMHAA co-hostedwith Eleos Health and Gaudenzia, Inc. “Close to 50 to 60% of text in notes is automatically generated. We are also seeing customers increase use of evidence-based practices by over 30%,” Joffe added. Another meaningful benefit is that Eleos embeds within existing electronic health records (EHRs) and telehealth systems, and it does not interfere with established workflows. Looking ahead, Joffe and his team plan to introduce support for group therapy sessions in 2023. “Imagine running four or five groups a day with significantly reduced documentation time,” Joffe said. NJAMHAA looks forward to sharing the news of continued innovation and customer success with Eleos Health. “ Our mission is to improve quality of care and outcomes, and enable providers to do their jobs by automating operations, and reducing the burden of administrative work.” Alon Joffe Co-Founder & CEO Eleos Health “
