Registration Brochure 21 APRIL 15, 2026 10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Morning Session (CONTINUED) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Dr. Morrison will examine the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI) in behavioral health care from two angles: client-facing tools (apps and chatbots) and clinician-facing tools (such as ambient listening documentation assistants). For consumer tools, Dr. Morrison will review the ethical and practical use of commercial behavioral health apps, highlight research-supported options available to the public, and explore the challenges posed by chatbots that act as intimate companions or quasi-therapists. He will also outline eight factors that drive emotional attachment to AI personas. For clinician tools, Dr. Morrison will address major ethical concerns related to AI-supported documentation systems, including how Large Language Models are trained, when and how to obtain patient consent, evaluating vendor privacy/security practices (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act/General Data Protection Regulation), and managing AI- related bias. Ethical standards from major behavioral health organizations (American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, National Association of Social Workers, and American Counseling Association) will be reviewed. Finally, Dr. Morrison and attendees will briefly consider broader issues shaping AI’s role in behavioral health, including environmental impact, whether AI supports or diminishes human cognitive processes, and the risks of unchecked AI expansion. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this session, attendees will be able to: 1. List two common problems associated with commercially available behavioral health apps. 2. Name one reputable source for locating research-based behavioral health apps. 3. Explain when patient consent is required for the use of artificial intelligence in clinical practice.
